Conflicts in My BOOK

Man vs. Self:
(Rick vs. Rick)
  • Rick has an internal struggle going on because he fights with his self on the issues of if he can continue his job or not. He is not sure if he is cut out for it. He also struggles with the want and need from the ownership of an animal.
  • It's really hard to discribe, but through out the whole both it seems like he is not at peace with himself. I think I feel this way because he wants to migrate, but can't. even though he really could if he wanted to he is just afraid.
  • He thinks much less of himself then he should, because there is nothing wrong with him. He is not a special, he has a good job, he is strong, and able.

Man vs. Man:

(Rick vs. Andriods)

  • Rick is againist the andriods because that is his job. He is a bounty hunter who is trained to kill the andriods.
  • He also struggles withif he can defeat them or if they will defeat him. at a couple of pionts int he book he thinks that they will defeat him. So, much to a piont that he calls Racheal to help him, but she almost becomes his defeat.
  • From the outsiders piont of veiw he didn't need any ones help. He was totally cappable of doing it all on his own.

Man vs. Society:

(Rick vs. People on Earth)

  • It is him againist the world because he struggles like all of use about where he belongs. Here on Earth or Mars.
  • Is he like the people around him. Can he defeated the obsticles in his way, the things that are making him unhappy.
  • Another question that is raised is can he survive this world or should he just go to a remote place and die.

Star Wars: Luke Sky Walker

I feel bad for Luke he is in a tough situation. I think that I can relate to him because in some ways I struggle with what I what to do and become, but on the other hand it would be so much easier just to give up and be just like his father. It makes it so much harder to believe that he can break the mold and be better when he keeps on failing. The question is in his mind will no matter how hard he tries, will the envitable happen any way? Is it really his destiny?
Mr. Nail is right some people chose to give in and some people chose to fight it. It can go both ways. Thats why we don't know what is going to happen. Will he give in or keep on fighting?

Star Wars vs. Text

The Star Wars Movie has some of the compontents that we have been talking about in class...
  1. Character Types:
  • Good guy - Luke Skywalker, Yoda, and The Force
  • Bad Guy - Darth Vader, and the Evil part of the Force
  • Andriods - C-3PO, R2-D2

2. Themes:

  • Good vs. Evil

3. What I think?

  • I think that most Science Fiction novel, movies, and so forth all have some component with robots, the struggle for good vs. evil, and some of the character types. this is a very technologically advanced society which is typical of science fiction. It is also placed in the future, which goes along with being technologically advanced like they are. They fly around in space ships and have unlimited access to outer space. we also have our tipical bad guy on the side of the evil force and our good guy trying to be apart of the the good force. we have our loyal andriods some smarter or dumber then others, but non the less present. one thing that I think will be a big theme in this movie is patients. yoda stresses it to Luke. I think this will be some thing he is going to have to pratice alot. He is just like every teenager he thinks he knows every thing and can handle any thing. Which I do not think is the case.

Faith in Mercerism

My book defintly has a faith element.
  • It is called Mercerism. Basically it is their version of God.
  • I don't really understand it. It has some thing to do with the difference between them and andriods. It deals with empathy, some the andriods don't have. They practice it by holding on to this box. They box shots out a light ray and they are in another place. In some parts they discribe it a climbing up a hill and having things thrown at them. And at others they are speaking to an old man Mercer himself. I know Rick's wife goes there to give others the joy that she has about getting a goat. In return it is suppost to be like giving thanks to Mercer. Rick seems to see it as giving away the joy that you did have.
  • To me I kind of feel like this old man is just like them. A figure that some one created. I would not want to think of my God as climbing up a hill that he will never reach the top before he dies. Mercer seems weak.

* The Star *

You know what I was thinking after the dicussion in class.....
  • How in the world does Mr. Nail figure out ALL that from reading the same thing I read ?
  • This story is amazing when you understand what the author is trying to tell you.
    • I was disappointed when I read this story at first. I really expected more because Mr. Nail usually picks out pretty good stuff. But, then I realized that it was me not him.
    • The author wrote this story really well. I wonder how he thought it up. The way people write like that really amazes me.
  • It is thought provoking...
    • What would people do if we found out that there was no God ?
      • I think that if there was no God people would do one of two things.
      • They would be in denial and keep on believeing in him or they would completly give up on the world.
      • And there could be one more possiblity... they could have had another religion and it doesn't affect them.
      • The irony in this story about about how one good thing happen in the place of another. Some times I think that, that is just the way things have to be to keep it balanced.
      • In order to for the world to be balanced it must sacrifice one good thing for some thing bad. And some thing of that magnitude means only one thing that a civilization had to be distroyed in this case.
